Solo exhibition Foreign Object opens January 10 at Gallery CU@Uddenberg, Göteborg. Vernissage January 10.

The exhibition presents 16 new works that return to my original practice of drawing, sculpture, and painting, now approached through abstraction. Moving away from my earlier detailed and surrealistic style influenced by the old masters.

Developed within a long-term investigation of foreignness and opacity, the works stage nordic landscapes and painted fields disrupted by dense geometric forms that refuse assimilation. These foreign objects operate as spatial and material conditions rather than symbols, asserting presence without translation, resolution, or adaptation.

The project also advances a method I developed in 2023, Sleeping as a Method. Initially working with nightmares, the method is used here conceptually to think through disorientation, estrangement, and my position as a subject navigating Western social and institutional structures.

This project is supported by Göteborg City.

Vernissage kl. 12-16
Adress: Kastellgatan 7

A Thousand Forms of Resistance at Zenit art magazine.

Opening this Saturday, November 29, at @vanersborgskonsthall at 13:00-15:00.

Exhibition is curated by Saranda Azemi and Märta Cassel.

My new solo exhibition, A Thousand Forms of Resistance – my largest exhibition to date – opens on Saturday, 29 November at 13:00 at Vänersborgs Konsthall.

The exhibition brings together works created under varying forms of censorship. Some were institutional; some emerged through self-censorship; some stem from the cultural expectations that shape the practice of artists navigating contexts marked by war, migration, and trauma.

After 7 October, these pressures became more pronounced. The silence and uncertainty I encountered in several art institutions reminded me of earlier experiences of suppression in Syria. The works in this exhibition were created while negotiating these conditions and examine how censorship continues to influence artistic practice.

The exhibition also includes my largest painting installation to date, as well as a new sound installation developed in collaboration with sound engineer Agnes Cassel.

Exhibition is curated by Saranda Azemi and Märta Cassel.

Swedish Radio’s P1 Kulturnyheter (Culture news) visited my studio in Majorna and interviewed me ahead of the announcement that I had received the Young Swedish Design Award. The reportage is part of a series following a selected group of Syrian artists who arrived in Sweden during the major refugee wave ten years ago and have successfully established themselves in the Swedish art scene. In the interview, I speak in Swedish about my artistic practice, creative process, and my experience as an award-winning Syrian artist who has built a professional artistic life in Sweden.
